Pink Soba Noodles

My first job upon graduating Parsons was designing Girl's clothing in the size ranges of 4-16. In the 3 years that I worked there, I learned that Pink, Pink and Pink were the top 3 selling colors in our category. The job sort of brainwashed me into loving the color. I worked with so many different Pantone shades of Pink on a daily basis, that I ended up being known as the girl who always wore something pink. It also got me to the point where every time I went shopping, whether it be for work or personal, that I would have selective eye sight into only seeing pinks.

A few weeks ago, I was at Sunrise Mart near St Marks. It was actually before I went to eat at Crif Dogs. While I was waiting for my friend to come out into the city, I took that time to familiarize myself better with this Japanese grocery store. I'm always reluctant to buy my groceries there because one, I hate waiting for the elevator, two, the elevator is always packed and three the grocery store is quite small and cramped, therefore, I always feel a little rushed. As I was scanning the aisles with my eyes, I saw pink standing out next to all the buckwheat soba noodles. I picked up the 2 bundle package, looked at the back and discovered that it was naturally colored pink. Plum is what colors it pink.

I cheated a little and bought already made dipping sauce - which made me drink a ton of water because of the MSG. But it was none-the-less delicious topped off with some roasted shredded seaweed and a touch of chopped scallions. The noodle itself has a huge influence of the plum flavor, and it delightfully has the chewy resemblance of eating a sour belt - ok maybe that's a bad example but it's gummy - I mean yummy!

Somehow I can feel the noodles bouncing in my mouth.
I want it too,
How come I never see that in the Japanese market?!
I guess my eyes are set for brown, so that only chocolate pops out in the aisles.

Yeah, those noodles are the meibutsu (famous/noted product) of Wakayama Prefecture, as they grow the best ume plums down there.

I have had ume soba and udon, but the rumor is that the locals don't eat it! This, if true, would be a bad sign. (But, I am not sure that it is true.)

Never-the-less, pink noodles are really novel (at least in Asia) and beautiful!

Kyoto has green noodles, Maccha! Excellent!

VB - Peko says it best and has tons of knowledge on this plum soba.

Peko - I actually agree with the locals in a way :( I prefer the original soba noodles to the plum flavored ones. I saw the green noodles in the market too but then it wouldn't go along with my story ! :)
Thanks so much for that info! I have a lot of learning to do still!

Omg that looks so good! I am an ume addict. I like sunrise market too, when I am on the lower east side I always pop in. I'll look for them next time I go.

I wonder how they would go with a macha sauce, I just got this cool green tea grinder and have been wanting to make macha sauce for soba noodles.
